Commonly Asked Questions

4What is WLSA?
The Women Law Students' Association is an organization that is open to both males and females that allows students to make connections within Toledo community.  As well as networking opportunities, WLSA has a strong commitment to the local community as well as the student body, and has a variety of volunteer opportunities to help improve relations with both the community and the school.
4How do I become a member?
To become a member, simply stop by the WLSA office, Room 1022, and fill out an application.  Applications are accepted year round.  You do not have to be a member to participate in most of our activities.
4Are there annual dues?
The annual dues are $20.  This includes a $15 membership fee to WLSA as well as a $5 membership fee to the Toledo Womens' Bar Association (TWBA) and the Ohio Women's Bar Association (OWBA), which offers free membership to WLSA members.
4How can WLSA help me succeed in law school?
WLSA has a variety of programs to help you succeed in law school.  We have study aids available for all first year classes available for sign out in the office.  We also have a "big sis/lil' sis" program that pairs a first year law student with an upper level law student.  Additionally, WLSA also has a TWBA mentoring program that allows you to be paired with a practicing attorney in the local community.  Throughout the year, social activities are planned to help students connect with other law students.
4What types of social activities does WLSA participate in?
There are a myriad of social activities that WLSA does throughout the school year.  Past activities have included a game night, a TWBA/WLSA social night at Manhattans, and a mentor/mentee pumpkin dinner.  Upcoming activities include a corn maze and a bonfire.  Suggestions are always welcome from our members, and will try to be accommodated.  Check the events page to see our upcoming social events.
4What types of community outreach is WLSA involved in?
Our members are very involved in the community.  Each September, WLSA has volunteers and walkers/runners participate in the Race for the Cure in downtown Toledo.  There is also a bake sale each September to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  Additionally, WLSA participates in Domestic Violence Awareness Week in October, raising consciousness of the issue throughout the law school.  WLSA also has a Women in the Law program, where high school and college students are invited to the law school for the day to participate in an actual class and meet with professors, administration, alumni, and practicing attorneys.  Check the events page to see our upcoming community events.
4What connections does WLSA have within the legal community?
Members have many connections within the legal community.  We will be offering a judge shadowing program next semester that will allow students to go to a judge's courtroom and observe a trial as well as interact with the judge.  Also, through our TWBA/WLSA mentor/mentee program, students are able to communicate and observe local attorneys in all areas of practice.  TWBA also sponsors events throughout the year that WLSA members are invited to attend, providing members with an opportunity to effectively network among the community.  Past events have included, the Salute to the Judiciary, the TWBA Fall Kickoff, and many other social events co-sponsored by TWBA and WLSA.
4Is it true WLSA offers annual scholarships to its members?
Yes, it is true.  Members will be given the opportunity to apply for scholarships offered by both WLSA and TWBA.  The amount and the number of recipients varies each year, depending on how much money is raised through various fund raisers.  Scholarship recipients are announced at the annual WLSA Banquet.
